choreographic research beyond the human body

CieMESS was founded in 2008 and initially worked within a more classical dance theatre context, creating performances with a strong focus on choreography, storytelling, and the performing body.
Over time, the practice gradually evolved toward a research-based approach, in which the body became less a central expressive tool and more one actor within a wider ecological and material landscape.

Artistic trajectory

The work of cieMESS unfolds through long-term research rather than fixed production cycles. Projects often begin from a question, a material condition or a physical constraint, and develop through studio work, testing, listening and reconfiguration. Choreography is approached as a relational practice, where bodies, objects, sound and spatial tensions continuously influence each other. Outcomes can take multiple forms, including performances, installations, or shared research moments.

Key creations / research milestones

— early shift
PI is an early dance production by cieMESS that approaches the number π as a choreographic principle. By translating digits into movement and dancing the infinite sequence of π, the work explores repetition, memory and the idea of infinity
— early shift
Scream of the Butterfly marked an early turning point in the practice, addressing vulnerability and domestic violence from a feminist and posthuman perspective. Rather than using language or narrative, the work articulated these tensions through sound, physical action and material interaction, allowing objects and forces to actively shape the choreographic field.
— research deepening
The Weight of a Thought expanded the choreographic field beyond the body alone, investigating how invisible forces such as pressure, anticipation and mental load shape movement. Sound and material presence became integral elements in the performative constellation.
— current research logic
Punktum functions as an open-ended research project in which choreography emerges from relations between body, object, sound and spatial tension. Rather than aiming at a fixed performance format, the work unfolds through situations, installations and performative moments.
— current research logic
Upcoming short film by cieMESS exploring overconsumption, ecological collapse and the legacy of human choices — currently in development pending support from sponsors and co-producers.

Current focus

cieMESS currently focuses on long-term choreographic research that can take the form of residencies, work-in-progress showings, conversations or performative situations. The practice is open to dialogue with institutions, research contexts and interdisciplinary platforms.
